Home favourite Sorribes Tormo had taken an early lead in taking the first set but Pavlyuchenkova levelled the score at a set apiece. The Russian broke early in the third before play had to be suspended due to fading light, the match halted after two hours and 16 minutes.

Pavlyuchenkova saved an early break point upon the resumption and raced on to take the set, 6-4, and the match, securing a second-round tie against Julia Goerges. The German had comfortably beaten Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena 6-1, 6-2 earlier on Tuesday.

Francesca Schiavone joined the No.1 seed in round two, the Italian coming from a set down to beat Eugenie Bouchard 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3.

“This match was not easy for either of us,” Schiavone said afterwards. “I think that she had many opportunities, but on grass you only get one chance and you have to take that chance. I think this happened more to me than with her, but I think it was a positive match. And for sure a good way to start the season on the grass.

“The conditions were very hot, but when it’s hot I love it. The ball became bigger and heavier so it was better for me.”

The wildcard, who turns 37 on Friday, began slower and lost the first set on a tiebreak after squandering a set point. The Italian found her form in the second set, however, breaking early and holding off a mini-recovery from Bouchard to level the match.
