Screams confuse Halep on bizarre Konta match point

Wimbledon quarter-finalist Simona Halep expected the chair umpire to replay the bizarre final point of the No.2 seed's loss to Johanna Konta overnight.

Konta had two match points serving at 5-4 in the third set when Halep's second shot landed just inside the baseline.

But an overexcited group of fans screamed in delight, seemingly believing the Romanian's shot went long despite Konta continuing the point.

A distracted Halep looked at the umpire as she lodged a soft forehand into the net, handing Konta the 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 victory.

"I thought he's going to repeat the point," Halep said after the match.

"I think it's normal to repeat the point when someone is screaming like that."

The 25-year-old would have become the world No.1 with a win over Konta but did not argue the point further.

"Because he said, 'We cannot replay'. I cannot change anything. So why I should fight?" she said.

Konta claimed the screams came during her shot and put her off as well as Halep.
