FIFA-Paul Pogba transfer story explained

Sky Sports' Bryan Swanson discusses the news FIFA have requested more information about Paul Pogba's world record transfer from Juventus to Man Utd
Paul Pogba's world-record transfer from Juventus to Manchester United was making headlines once again on Wednesday morning after FIFA confirmed it has requested further information on the deal.

Here, we explain the details around the story and what it might mean…

FIFA have requested more details about Paul Pogba's £89.3m world-record transfer from Juventus to Manchester United in August 2016. However, football's governing body has stressed this is not a formal investigation.

What information do they already have - and what do they want to know?

FIFA won't give specifics but both clubs submitted details via their International Transfer Matching System (ITMS) in August. Every international transfer must go through ITMS for a deal to be signed off.

ITMS requires more than 20 key pieces of information about a contract, including the type of transfer, the agents involved, the payment methods and any fees involved.

So FIFA cleared Pogba's transfer in August without complaint?

They did - and Manchester United insist they have given FIFA the relevant documents required. "FIFA have had the documents since the transfer in August," United said in a statement.

Clubs are only issued with an International Transfer Certificate when FIFA officials are completely satisfied over transparency.

What may have sparked FIFA's inquiries?

The reason for FIFA's requests are unclear. However, news of FIFA looking into the Pogba transfer comes on the back of extracts from a book, The Football Leaks: The Dirty Business of Football, published in Germany this week, which included a breakdown of the deal - including vast sums paid to Pogba's agent, Mino Raiola, a registered intermediary with the Football Association.

Why are FIFA and ITMS so stringent on transfer deals?

ITMS oversees around 12,000 cross-border transfers of players each year - a huge number of transactions. Its purpose is to bring transparency to these deals and ensure they are being made in conjunction with FIFA's rules on transfers.

What do they need to know about the fee?

The information requested by FIFA covers a wide range of details, including payment amounts, the currency of the deal, dates the transactions will take place and the bank details of the parties involved.

FIFA is also informed of player salaries, agents involved, clauses which have been activated from previous contracts or inserted into new deals and sell-on fees which may be required.

FIFA also require declarations to be made on third-party payments and influence, as well as what ownership third-parties have over players' economic rights.

What else was revealed in the book?

Football Leaks: The Dirty Business of Football, also claim to reveal that Manchester United are playing Zlatan Ibrahimovic a salary of more than £19m - equivalent to a weekly wage of £367,600. That is more than double the £165,500 United are paying Pogba, according to the same claims.
